Types of Financial Aid
Meeting the cost of an undergraduate education is a significant investment. At UC San Diego, we are committed to providing a comprehensive need-based financial aid program that makes it financially possible for admitted students to attend. Our admission program is need-blind, meaning, for all but some international applicants, financial status will not affect the admission decision.
GRANTS
Grants are gift aid (financial aid you don't have to pay back) based on your financial need.
LOANS
Loans are self-help aid (financial aid you must repay with interest) available under varying terms and conditions.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships are gift aid (financial aid you don't have to pay back) awarded on merit, academic excellence, and additional criteria, such as financial need or leadership.
WORK-STUDY
Work-study is self-help aid (money you must earn) offered through federal- or state-subsidized student employment programs.
STUDY ABROAD & EXCHANGE PROGRAMS
Financial aid is available for study abroad programs, exchange programs, and internships during both the summer and the regular academic year. Aid is also available for a number of exchange programs.
SUMMER SESSION
UC San Diego's Summer Session is considered an addition to the academic year. Limited financial aid funding is available. Be sure to enroll in at least 6 units at your earliest opportunity for possible priority funding (if eligible).
