Cost of Attendance
2022-23 Academic year appeals
Due by May 15, 2023
Unexpected expenses can occur despite careful planning of your academic year budget. If you incur certain costs above the expenses shown on UC San Diego's estimated costs of attendance, the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office may be able to add them to your budget and cover them based on funding availability. On occasion, other types of funding may be available such as work-study or, for Graduate students, departmental funds.
Family Contribution Appeals
2022-23 Academic year appeals
Due by May 15, 2023
Financial Aid and Scholarships provides a Family Contribution Appeal when changes to a family's financial situation occur, special circumstances which are not reflected on their initial aid application. By exception, Financial Aid and Scholarships will review and consider changes to the student's available aid based on the information provided.
Dependency Appeals
2022-23 Academic year appeals
Due by May 15, 2023
This appeal is for applicants who would like to request a review of their dependency status for financial aid consideration. Please read the following information before submitting a Dependency Appeal. Federal regulations state that a student is considered independent for financial aid if he or she can answer yes to any one of the dependency questions on the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application. The dependency criteria are the same for both applications.
If you do not meet any of the criteria and feel your circumstances warrant review for independent status, submit a Dependency Appeal form, and supporting documents, to the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office for review. Please note, a student is not considered independent solely based on:
- self-sufficiency
- a parent's unwillingness to provide information
- a parent's unwillingness to assist with educational expenses
- a parent not claiming the student as a dependent for income tax purposes
If you have read the above and wish to submit a Dependency Appeal, please see the Instructions.
